About Coasts in Mind

Coasts in Mind is a pioneering new three-year project from MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology). Made possible by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Coasts in Mind is empowering communities to record the impact of climate and coastal change in some of England's most vulnerable coastal areas.

“Climate change is increasingly altering coastal ecosystems, landscapes, and the ways of life that communities have built around their local coastal environments.
Over the last one hundred years, local people living on England’s coastlines have witnessed the erosion of large swathes of habitat, as well as the loss of their related livelihoods, local cultural practices, and associated systems of knowledge” - Lawrence Northall, Coasts in Mind Project Manager.

Following a successful pilot stage in 2023, we're bringing together community groups, local museums, and archives in our four key regions, to explore the impact of coastal change on their local area.

The Community Archive

Together our coastal communities will co-curate a Community Archive on our new online mapping platform developed by HUMAP.

The community archive will hold evidence of coastal change from the 1920s to the present day. This includes:

  • local knowledge and memories in the form of oral history
  • locally held archival records, such as historic photographs, postcards, and other documentary sources
