Swale Estuary

Discover Swale Estuary's changing coastline...

About the Swale Estuary

Located on the North Kent coast, just below where the Thames and Medway rivers meet the sea, the Swale Estuary has been nationally and internationally important throughout the ages for its saltmarsh landscapes, fishing, shipping routes, and coastal habitats.

Archaeology around the Swale Estuary includes:

  • early medieval fish traps
  • historic dockyards
  • World War I and II defences
  • medieval salterns (saltworks)
  • remains of Roman buildings and oyster farming

We’re exploring how changes in the climate, local industries, and more have affected the coastline over the past 100 years. From shellfish harvesting to Second World War defences, we’ll be recording community experiences of coastal change.

Get involved

Between 2025 - 2027 we’ll be working with local community groups, heritage institutions and community hubs to deliver:

  • workshops
  • creative projects
  • coastal archaeology recording sessions
  • walks, talks, and more!
