Uncovering the Front Brents and Beyond

Just beneath the surface of an unassuming green on the west bank of Faversham Creek, the uncovered remains of 19th century terraces tell tales of past lives and livelihoods that rose and fell with the tides of the Swale estuary.

As part of the Open Faversham festival; Kent Archaeological Society, the Faversham Creek Trust, the Faversham Society and Coasts in Mind delivered a community archaeological excavation which was interwoven with the fabric of local residents perspectives through public image and memory sharing workshops.

The full archaeological & social history report is now freely available through Archaeology Data Service and you can read it here.

The investigations revealed an all but vanished coastal community that was once home to mariners, oystermen, bargemen and brickmakers alongside shopkeepers, shipbuilders and publicans. Follow their stories from the site out along the intertidal creek in our new story map here
