The base map you see is an OpenStreetMap, you can change the map view at the top of the page to any of the available overlays by selecting ‘change map’. You will also see red shaded areas which represent the boundaries of the regions we are collecting data for.

You can manually move the map around to change what you can see:

  • To zoom in, click on the plus icon on the top right-hand corner of the map, and click the minus icon to zoom out again. You can also use the scroll wheel on a mouse to zoom
  • To pan the map around, simply left-click and hold the mouse or trackpad button and drag the map in any direction.

A black compass icon and the word Browse

Browsing: To start looking at records, select the compass icon in the left-hand menu to open the browse tray. This view will show all records and collections on the map.

To start looking at individual records you can select one from the browse tray or click on a pin on the map.

The browse tray contains thumbnail images of all the records that can be seen on the current map view. Select any of these to bring you to the full record. If you navigate within the map view with the browse tray open, the records in the browse tray will change according to what is visible on the map.

Clicking a pin on the map will bring up a preview above the pin, click the preview to explore the individual record.

A black magnifying glass and the word Search

Searching: There are two types of search function in the platform. The first is ‘Find Place’ located at the top of the map. You can use this to search for places on the base map. This is only a location search to help you navigate and will not search the archive for records.

To search the archive records, go to the magnifying glass icon in the left menu which will bring up the search tray.

At the top of this page is the text search. You can type any search term here to make a broad search of the existing data by keyword. This will search record titles, descriptions and data fields.

To narrow your search, there is the option to filter by each of the different fields within a record, including: by date, type of record, visible foreshore features, signs of biodiversity and effects of change.

Using Collections: Collections can be found in the browse tray and will be marked ‘Collection’ in a black box in the corner of the thumbnail image. You can also search for Collections by ticking the box in the Content Type filter in the search tray.

Trails: To find trails, click on the icon of a person walking. This will bring up all of the trails available in the portion of the map you are currently viewing. Click on a tile to open the dedicated page for that trail.
